As much as we love summer and the easy-going sensibility that goes along with it, nothing beats the layering and mixing of textures that fall ushers in. Leather jackets, knit wool sweaters and tweed skirts are just a few cold weather wardrobe essentials that can be styled in a multitude of ways. Even if you’re not one for leather, you’d be surprised at how versatile this material actually is. The inspiration for this week’s designer look for less illustrates how easy it is to toughen up a preppy ensemble with the addition of a bit of leather.
Take note from this edgy-meets-feminine ensemble from A.L.C.’s fall 2012 collection and you’ll be switching up your style in no time.
The Designer Look: While some runway designs are too avant-garde and don’t always translate well to everyday looks, Andrea Lieberman’s entire fall collection for A.L.C. is surprisingly wearable. From a simple paisley frock worn with heels to a vintage-inspired chunky knit sweater paired with leather pants, each ensemble appears fashion-forward, fresh and sophisticated. The look above consists of a printed dress, mustard yellow cardigan, leather jacket and heels and it is perfect for roaming around the city and dinner dates. Although you wouldn’t normally think to layer your leather jacket over a cardigan and dress, it actually creates for an interesting combination. The stark contrast between the black leather and mustard yellow is bold; especially when a busy print is thrown in the mix.
The Look for Less:
1. Moto Jacket from dELIA*s, $40
2. Style Synthesis Dress from ModCloth, $80
3. Cardigan from H&M, $18
4. To A Point Sueded Pump from Charlotte Russe, $26
The Look for Less Total: $164
Style Tip: If you’re partial to leather goods, then opt for vegan or faux-leather. They give you the look of real leather at a fraction of the cost. I like to think that leather jackets are an acquired taste; you either like them or you don’t!
