Everyday Makeup & Hair Style Advice from the Runway

The fear of looking too overdone or clown-like can plague your makeup routine, and changing your hairstyle too drastically gives you anxiety, leaving you in a rut. Luckily, we have the best tips straight from the runway so you can achieve a new look with a little fun while remaining pretty and polished.

Tip #1: Experiment with this season’s greatest trends.

Do not fall behind the curve. It is as important to change your makeup routine as it is your wardrobe each year.

Womens’ makeup routines always seem to fall victim to monotony. We like to stick to what we know for fear of breaking out or spending money on a potential product that may fall flat. Change your makeup philosophy. No massive changes need to be made: This year’s fall and winter fads solely rely on what you already own.

Everyday: For everyday wear, try the “no makeup” makeup look. It sounds impossible to accomplish, but only your closest girlfriends will know your little secret. You can apply a tinted moisturizer or skip that step and go straight for two coats of mascara, blush and lip balm. It’s all about looking effortlessly polished. This is perfect for the girls who love to get dolled up. You may also find that it’s far less time consuming and suits your features better.

Rosy cheeks, which have been coined après-ski cheeks (that flushed look you get after skiing), are another popular trend this season. Ditch the bronzer and add some life back into your complexion. Embrace the winter cold and forget about the summer glow! For this effect, you should use blushes in the pink/red family.

A Night Out: For a night out, it’s all about taking your existing makeup routine into overdrive. We usually never play up our lips and eyebrows during the day but now we can.

As Diane Von Furstenberg revealed in her "Book of Beauty:"

“It’s very often true that some women look better without makeup, but that’s only during the day.”

Take her advice, vamp it up, and thicken those brows!

Wild: Everybody has heard about color blocking, and some of us have already tried it in the fashion world. You know it’s a must-try trend when it makes a crossover to the beauty world. This avante-garde smokey eye is perfect for a night out dancing! Keep it heavy on the lids and light everywhere else.

Tip #2: It’s all about the hair!

If you’re happy with your everyday face but still crave a transformation, then play up your hair.

Everyday: For a conservative/everyday look, go back to the basics with a sleek ponytail. Forget about the boring schoolgirl image, think sexy model! Tyra Banks has taught us time after time that the ponytail is THE hairstyle for a model.

Another simple but striking trend is the deep side part; think Lana Del Rey-glamour. The side part portrays sophistication and old-school Hollywood glamour, plus it is a great way to slim down your face!

A Night Out: Aside from the staple winter hats, this season is all about adorning your hair with gorgeous ornaments. Use stylish, abstract hairpins, heavily ornate barrettes or retro headbands.

One of the best hairstyles from this season are braids. Braids are a classic hairstyle that have gone through an extreme makeover, making them more interesting and elaborate. The trick here is to keep your hair naturally unkempt to create what College Gloss is calling “bedhead braids.” They prove that messy is sexy.

Wild: For those of us who prefer a little drama, try statement bangs. Not just any bangs, but long, blunt bangs: the type that almost cover your eyes! Bangs give you an instant makeover without all the hassle of coloring, instead chopping in some layers and using tons of hairspray to maintain a ‘do.

The most daring look is the bouffant, reminiscent of Adele’s voluminous locks: retro and 60s-inspired. If you are the adventurous type, add a bouffant with a headband or with your locks down. But we can’t blame you if you tone it down a bit. It’s basically a couture, Snooki poof circa 2010!

Many of these fashion trends are taking us back in time by beautifying trends that were once seen as juvenile and tacky, making them sexy and age-appropriate.

It’s all about inspiration and execution: find a way in which these styles can be best worn by you. Fashion and beauty are a successful translation from the runway to everyday life.
