The Little Black Dress, or LBD as it is affectionately known, is as much a symbol of our society today as fireworks are on the Fourth of July. From Jackie Kennedy Onassis to Michelle Obama, everyone has one.
Fashion historians attribute the creation of the little black dress to Coco Chanel, who debuted it in Vogue in 1926, as a piece designed to be versatile, neutral and long lasting. And Coco was obviously onto something, as the LBD is now almost 90 years old!
Because the little black dress is such a staple, it can be dressed up, dressed down or worn completely on its own. Audrey Hepburn wore it in Breakfast at Tiffany’s with layers of pearls and glam, transforming it into the perfect choice for formals or other special occasions.
It’s just as easy to wear casually, with flats or boots and a light scarf as the fall weather gets chillier. A lavender or burgundy pashmina scarf adds a pop of color, or a sand or gray shade keeps the whole look neutral. This outfit is more appropriate for class or happy hour with your best girlfriends and is sure to impress the cute guys at the next table.
Adding to its versatility, the little black dress is not too chic for work. Paired with a colored blazer and heels, it’s also appropriate for an interview or internship. A primary colored cardigan in royal blue or a gray jacket are classic additions to the LBD that won’t attract too much attention, but still look trendy.
The little black dress is almost impossible to avoid. You’ll see it at holiday parties, as office attire and definitely when you’re window-shopping this season. Some online websites even have whole sections dedicated to the piece! Although you only really need one LBD, once you start browsing you won’t want to stop!
