Closet Must-Have: Mad About Plaid

What started out as a lumberjack’s uniform has quickly made its way into the hearts of many collegiates. A fitted plaid shirt is a cold weather staple, and if you’re stumped on how to wear it without looking like you’re headed to a costume party, fear no more.

One of the most classic ways to style your plaid shirt is with a white tee underneath or a bandeau peeking out of the top. Pair the two with leggings and throw on some boots before you head to the ice rink. For added warmth, consider a puffer vest like this one from J. Crew. Stick with simple colors, such as navy and black, to ensure they’ll match the plaid button down (although the hot pink one is admittedly the most fun).

Plaid shirts that have many colors comprising the stripes are an awesome opportunity for matching cute accessories. If your plaid shirt has a yellow stripe as an accent, it’s a glam chance to wear a cute yellow hair bow (like this one available at American Apparel), as yellow might ordinarily be too bright for a main feature.

Luckily, plaid shirts come in many shades and materials. So, if you’re going for a wintery appearance, look for deeper shades of blues and reds in flannel, as opposed to brighter pinks and pastels in cotton. To add some extra pizazz to your look, pair your shirt with a scarf or earwarmer headband before you venture out into the cold!

Target has them for $19.99 each here.

With the fall semester behind you, it’s time for cozy outfits to lounge by the fireplace. Consider pairing jeans and Uggs with your plaid shirt. You’ll look like you belong on a postcard for the North Pole, and you’ll stay warm all night!
