7 Essentials to Being Happier in Your 20s

“We’re happy, free, confused and lonely at the same time,” Taylor Swift reminds us in her single, “22.” That pretty much sums up a day in the life of a 20-something. But no matter where life takes you during this tumultuous decade, be true to yourself and always follow these seven essential rules.

1. Be Forever Young
Being Forever Young means achieving timelessness, the feeling that pushes you to make the most out of everyday life. Approach every day and situation with originality. Life is not about having expectations, which can lead to disappointment, but rather believing in the good and rolling with the punches. Appreciate what it means to be young, and hold onto that feeling.

2. Don’t Waste Energy
Jealousy and insecurity are useless emotions. Turn them into something more productive, and let it propel you forward. Never let the fear of not being good enough, pretty enough or talented enough keep you from achieving your goals.

3. Brush it Off
Let go of anger. Don’t blame someone else for your mistakes. Own up to your faults, and take responsibility for your own actions. Life is a learning process. We all make mistakes, and no one is perfect.

4. Decipher: Friend or Foe
We’ve been told to keep our friends close but our enemies closer. While every relationship means something, let go of the enemies. Life is too short to hold grudges.

5. Follow Your Heart
Some say we only find that one true love once in a lifetime, or that soul mates are hard to come by. If we never open our hearts to new possibilities and relationships, we never learn from our mistakes. Love as much as you can; don’t be scared of it, and don’t let a bad experience close you off for good.

6. Be Kind
Stop bragging and criticizing – no, really. Despite what it looks like on someone’s Facebook or Twitter, no one has it figured out. We all have our own hopes, dreams and goals. There is no need to be vain or harsh on others because at the end of the day, we are all beautiful in our own way.

7. Have No Regrets
Never regret any moment, experience or relationship because at some point, it is exactly what you wanted. When you try something new and it doesn’t work out, don’t fret. Knowing what you don’t want can often be more valuable than knowing what you do want.
Every day is the start to a new chapter. Hold on to your 20s while they’re here. And live. It. Up!
